On Saturday I was a tourist. I went to Hwaseong Fortress with a few friends.

The construction period of Hwaseong was between January 1794 and September 1796.  Hwaseong is known as a masterpiece in the history of fortification.  It consists of 41 facilities, however, 7 facilities have not been restored.  Hwaseong, constructed over 200 years ago, has the most modern scale and function.  (I stole this from the brochure).

I shot a couple rolls of pinhole so I’m excited to see how those turn out.  On our climb to the top we stopped about halfway and I did a pinhole portrait of Joey, Nero, Paula and myself.  Joey speaks Korea and said when the Koreans were walking by they said, “They aren’t taking a picture, that camera is broke.”  How funny is that!

No matter where I go with my wonderful little pinhole camera, a small crowd usually forms around me.  Even people that don’t speak English want to know what I’m doing.  One of the girls in the group translated and they all ooooh’d and aaaaah’d.  I handed out many postcards. It was quite the celebrity moment.  I think I should make some with my Korean information.

The fortress was nice. I kept waiting for a castle. My favorite part were the gardens and waterfall.  The waterfall wasn’t anything like the photos in the tourist center showed.  It was quite small, but surrounded by walls overgrown with ivy and beautiful bright flowers.  It was very peaceful.

I posted some photos here.
